Carbon Capture at the Wyoming Integrated Test Center: Pioneering Large-Scale Membrane-Based Carbon Capture
Advancing Carbon Capture Technology for Global Impact
At the forefront of carbon capture technology, MTR Carbon Capture (MTR) is set to operationalize the world’s largest membrane-based carbon capture plant at the Wyoming Integrated Test Center, a CCUS testing facility operating at Dry Fork Power Station in Gillette, Wyoming, under a pioneering project sponsored by the U.S. Department of Energy.
This large pilot plant, leveraging MTR’s Polaris™ polymeric membranes, underscores a significant advancement in carbon capture technology, focusing on both environmental sustainability and industrial feasibility.
Project Insights
Commencing operations in the fall of 2024, this landmark project will capture 150 tonnes of CO₂ daily with a 90% capture rate. This initiative is part of the Department of Energy’s effort to promote transformational technologies that enhance carbon capture’s efficiency and environmental impact.
Situated at the Wyoming Integrated Test Center — one of the largest post-combustion demonstration-scale facilities globally — the plant will capture CO₂ from flue gas emitted by the coal-fired Dry Fork Station, which uses Powder River Basin coal.
Strategic Benefits
The project demonstrates the viability of retrofitting existing facilities with MTR’s membrane-based technology, offering a sustainable path to achieving stringent emissions targets and supporting the transition to a low-carbon economy.
The large-pilot project provides valuable insights for the deployment of this technology, showcasing a practical example of advancing carbon capture without the use of chemicals and minimal water usage, setting a new standard for clean technology in traditional industries.
This is a successful model of government-industry collaboration that drives significant advancements in carbon capture technology, aligning with national goals for emissions reduction and sustainable industrial practices.
Community and Environmental Impact
This project champions environmental stewardship through its zero liquid discharge operation, eliminating the use of hazardous chemicals and minimizing water usage. It embodies a commitment to cleaner energy production processes, thereby reducing the ecological footprint of traditional coal-fired power generation.
Vision for the Future
MTR Carbon Capture’s project at the Integrated Test Center not only represents a leap forward in the application of membrane capture technology but also serves as a beacon for the global energy sector’s potential transformation. By showcasing the effectiveness of Polaris™ membranes in large-scale applications, MTR sets a benchmark for future projects, enabling the widespread adoption of carbon capture technologies that align with global decarbonization objectives.
